Materials science and its engineering is simply the scientific study of materials and their properties for resulting engineering design and improvement. We manufacture and process materials as well as design and construct components or structures using materials; select materials, analyze failures of materials, or simply hope the materials we are using perform adequately. Materials may be classified into several groups: metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, and composite materials. Materials in each of these groups possess different structures and properties. Deciding on which material best fits your application or design is called materials selection. In Material Science & Engineering understanding the material selection process is the key to engineering any application and/or part design. Material selection is the foundation of all engineering applications and design. In materials science, rather than haphazardly looking for and discovering materials and exploiting their properties, one instead aims to understand materials fundamentally so that new materials with the desired properties can be created.

Product Engineering or Software Product engineering comprises of the process of innovating, designing, developing, testing and deploying a software product. Product Engineering is the entire product life cycle from the innovation phase, starting from the idea being conceived to the deployment and user acceptance testing phase.  The evolving product lifecycle elements such as reducing product development times, increasing expectations on quality, manufacturing process optimization and design cost pressures. The increasing demand for enriching user experience also places more emphasis on cutting edge product engineering solutions. Process Engineering involves selection of the processes to be used, determination of the sequence of all operations, and requisition of special tools to make a product.

To accomplish manufacturing processes with little or no manual effort, we need automation and it is the application of special equipment to control such cases. It is applied to the manufacturing of all types of goods and processes, from the raw material to the finished product. This involves many activities, such as handling, processing, assembly, inspecting, and packaging. Its primary objective is to lower manufacturing cost through controlled production and quality, lower labor cost, reduced damage to work by handling, higher degree of safety for personnel, and economy of floor space.

Track 12: Machine Tool Operation

It is a process in which tools like milling machines, CNC machining centers and supplementary machine tools are used to transform metal to precise size and shapes.  Machine tool operators prepare and plan different processes to manufacture parts using blueprint and computer aided design drawing and then they set up, operate and machine the parts to required specifications. After the machining operations, they use precision measuring instruments, such as gauges and micrometers to inspect and make parts to the exact specifications as required.

Track 14: Heat Transfer and Thermal Engineering

The science that deals with the determination of the rates of such energy transfers is the heat transfer. Heat transfer is the exchange of thermal energy between physical systems. Thermal engineering encompasses mass transfer, fluid mechanisms, heat transfer, thermal conduction and convention and thermodynamics. Solar heating, boiler design, thermal power plants, cooling systems, designing of combustion systems and cooling of computer chips are some of the important applications of these disciplines.

 Thermal Engineering is the specialized sub-subject of Mechanical engineering that deals totally with heat transfer between not only different mediums, but also into other usable forms of energy. Thermal Engineers are need to know about the economics of the components and processes they design to make sure they not only provide an improvement over the prevailing solutions, but also don’t lose the company money. It involves the science of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer.

Track 15: Metrology and Inspection

Metrology is defined as establishing the units of measurements and their reproduction in the form of standards and ascertaining the uniformity of measurements as well as developing methods of measurement, analyzing the accuracy of methods of measurement. It is also described as establishing uncertainty of measurement, and investigating the causes of measuring errors and subsequently eliminating them.

Inspection is defined as a procedure in which a part of product characteristic such as a dimension is observed to determine whether it conforms to the design specification. Principally inspection is carried out to isolate and calculate a specific design or quality attribute of a component or product. In inspection, the part either passes or fails. Thus, industrial inspection has become a very important aspect of quality control.

Market in Spain

Economic growth has been strong and balanced in 2017, and is projected to moderate but remain robust in 2018 and beyond. However, in design and production Automotive is a key sector of the Spanish economy, as it accounts for 10% of the Spanish industry sectors share of GDP and about 9% of employment. Spain is the 2nd largest car manufacturer in Europe, after Germany, and ranks number nine globally. Nine original equipment manufacturers (OEM) are active in Spain with a total of 17 production plants. The automotive component producers worldwide are Spanish businesses, with good performance in Europe, Asia and the NAFTA region. Automotive is Spain’s 2nd largest export industry with more than 85% of the national production exported.

Over 90% of the vehicles are manufactured in Spain are shipped abroad to 130 countries. Thousands of companies belonging to 720 entrepreneurial groups are located in Spain, providing a fast and customized service to manufacturing plants. In 2015, the Spanish automotive sector performed well, as production and capacity usage returned to pre-crisis levels. Spanish design and car production increased 12% to more than 2.7 million units. Automotive exports increased 11.4% by units and 18% by value, to EUR 31.7 million. This upswing continued in 2016, with domestic car production increasing 11.2% year-on-year in first half of 2016, to more than 1.6 million units, according to the Spanish car designing and production association. The outlook for 2018 remains benign, with growth in line with the Spanish economy and output of more than 3 million units expected.

Spain has a highly advanced aerospace design and production industry that offers excellent opportunities for foreign companies. Sales reached an estimated USD 10.7 billion in 2015 and the sector employs more than 54,000 workers. It is characterized by rapid growth in recent years and significant investment in R&D, up to 10.5% of turnover in aeronautics and 12% in space.

Market in Europe

Mechanical engineering is one of the major branches of manufacturing in the EU28, with a share of around 9.1% of all production in manufacturing industries. Compared to other industries, mechanical engineering firms are characterized by a relatively high manufacturing depth. This is mainly due to three factors: predominant small-batch and single item production, high qualification requirements in manufacturing departments, and the need for close communication between manufacturing, engineering and design departments. As a result, the share of mechanical engineers value added of total manufacturing is higher than that of production, reaching around 11.5%.

In foreign trade with manufactured design, the EU shows a noteworthy deficit. In 2010 extra-EU exports only amounted to 1,343.9 billion euros, whereas imports reached 1,500.6 billion euros. For ME however, exports amounted to 200.4 billion euros, with imports of 81.2 billion euros. In 2010 the trade deficit for total manufactured goods had reached 156.7 billion euros. Without the surplus created by mechanical engineers, it would have been more than three quarters higher and would have reached 275.9 billion euros. Over the period under consideration, the EU mechanical engineers trade surplus nearly tripled and more than compensated for the growing deficits in trade with manufactured products. Mechanical engineer is responsible for 9.5% of all the production in European Union manufacturing industries.

Europe is the arena’s largest designer, producer and exporter of machinery with an estimated 36% share of the world market. The mechanical engineering industry is an excellent example of an EU sector that is performing well economically. The European ME sector is expected to grow at an annual average rate of 3.8% over the next 10 years.

The Computer Aided Engineering market show an 11.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the next five years, amounting to a market value of $5,863.36 million by 2021. This growth reflects an increased reliance on CAE tools across sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, defense and medical device industries.
